Artist Statement

A fundamental value that I gravitate to when viewing art is meaning beyond visual presentation. Having spent time observing the personal struggles others face, I have developed a conceptual focus on the bodily struggle for identity. Medium non-specificity is central to my practice in which I produce work that allows for a personal discovery of the intersecting global concerns in which we all may experience subconsciously or consciously. A main principle in my artwork includes engagement in a wide variety of mediums. In order to best convey the human body in its truth, I focus on highlighting both internal and external insecurities. New experiences, distinct moods, and higher education have resulted in an evolution of my practice.

My work reflects the female figure in a layered, tangible manner in its attempt to deconstruct issues of the female body, the struggle of identity and existence, and the 'imagining' of human beings who may not fit into the limitations of societal norms. In my recent works, this is reflected by incorporating stitching as an act of the punctured wounds (both internally and externally) that we carry with ourselves and the weight accumulated over time.  Recent influences that contribute to my work have been diverse in an attempt to liberate my practice; I aim to not add conceptual and technical constraints throughout my process. I find many constraints are placed on women, thus, within my practice, it is imperative to refuse this notion. Working in mixed media enables my work to present as non-constrictive, liberating, and expressive.
